Black History Month (BHM) 2020

The establishment of ACSA also came with the initiative to bring awareness to Black History Month (BHM) as we did last year in 2019. This year we started off with a BHM parade in collaboration with the Nigerian Students’ Association that caught the attention and sparked the interest of numerous students and faculty members across campus! Co-currently, we had a BHM-themed scavenger hunt where participants were tasked with identifying and capturing images of items related to BHM that were skillfully scattered across campus.

BHM: MELANIGHT 2019

This gala showcased different aspects of culture such as music, dance, fashion and of course, cuisine. This event was generously sponsored by multiple organizations which we are eternally grateful for such as Nando’s on 17th Avenue, TD Bank, ZipCoin and the Nigerian Calgarian Association. We had an amazing turnout of approximately 200 people and people left the event with positive feedback!

BHM: Parade and Flashmob

This event took place on a route around campus and provided a time for dancing and celebration for our African and Caribbean students. It was also an opportunity for us to share our culture with the rest of the university.

Charity Date Auction

A portion of the proceedings from the event went towards Build Africa, a charity that not only builds schools for rural children, but helps families, educators and communities so that children stay in school. This event allowed students to “bid” for dates with “dates” that volunteered to take part in the event.
