BHM: MELANIGHT 2020

This year’s Melanight included a variety of cultural performances from several African and Caribbean cultural groups in the form of dance, fashion, and poetry and an open dance floor.

A charity raffle was conducted throughout the night, giving guests the opportunity to win amazing prizes. The proceeds of the charity raffle benefitted the Build Africa charity, which uses education as a means of combatting poverty in African countries.

Black History Month (BHM) 2020

The establishment of ACSA also came with the initiative to bring awareness to Black History Month (BHM) as we did last year in 2019. This year we started off with a BHM parade in collaboration with the Nigerian Students’ Association that caught the attention and sparked the interest of numerous students and faculty members across campus! Co-currently, we had a BHM-themed scavenger hunt where participants were tasked with identifying and capturing images of items related to BHM that were skillfully scattered across campus.

Charity Date Auction VOL. 2

This was ACSA’s second “Building Love” Charity Date Auction, an “auction” allowing all University of Calgary students to bid on potential dates (energetic student volunteers) in support of the Build Africa charity organization. Build Africa uses education as a means to support the end of poverty in Africa, and a percentage of all proceeds from this event went to this charity. After the event, UofC’s Den and Black Lounge were booked as a hang-out location for all dates and auction winners.

Speak Your Truth VOL. 3

This has become a staple ACSA event over the last few years, and allows ACSA members to discuss and share their opinions and feelings about a variety of topics. These topics range from serious social issues, to relationship deal breakers, to whether or not leaving the crust behind on a pizza is a big deal. Only one person can speak at time by using the power of the “speaking stick” (pictured below). This is always a very energetic, sometimes heated, and always popular ACSA event.
